Making your patio furniture last for years
My backyard is the gathering place for the whole family. Whether it is for a Father’s Day barbecue, or for an evening watching the sunset, my whole family has spent countless hours gathered around our patio table. The outdoor furniture gets its fair share of abuse, both from weather, and from regular wear and tear. And since it is such an important gathering place for my family, we want to take all the proper precautions to ensure our outdoor furniture lasts for years to come.
When it came to choosing our outdoor furniture, we chose something that would be a little less maintenance. I loved some of the Adirondack wood sets, but they require a bit more maintenance as far as sanding and staining regularly to keep them looking beautiful. Instead, I chose a metal set which is almost completely maintenance free. After choosing my metal outdoor patio furniture, I had to choose cushions to accent the beauty of the furniture, as well as provide lasting comfort. It is important to look for something that is well-made and durable.
Generally, the better quality, the more expensive the initial costs will be. But in the long-run, you will save money because you shouldn’t have to replace your cushions as often. Once I selected a well-made seat cushion, it has been important to maintain them. This includes removing them for inclement weather. Weather will fade any patterns and help to more quickly cause wear and tear to the fabric. Simply taking your cushions inside for the winter will ensure you will get another season out of them.
For our outdoor patio furniture, it was also important to choose a well-made, sturdy umbrella. Our backyard has a great deal of western exposure and sunlight, so a good, large umbrella is essential to providing comfort from the hot afternoon sun. In order to ensure our umbrella lasts for years, we only put it up when we are outside, and when winds are minimal. Even the sturdiest of umbrellas can get swept away on a windy afternoon!
Choosing the right outdoor furniture to meet your family’s needs can sometimes be tricky. But once the decision is made, there are just a few simple things you can do to ensure your furniture will last for years to come. And hopefully, your outdoor patio furniture will be the gathering place for your family for years to come!
